Alice was inspired by Alice Ball, the famous American chemist. Alice Augusta Ball was born July 24, 1892 in Seattle, Washington. She developed the most effective treatment for leprosy during the early 20th century which was dubbed the “Ball Method.”  Alice was not only the first woman, but also the first African American to get a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.

Beryl is also the author of “West with the Night” which recounts some of her aviation memories and accomplishments.

Her career in jazz music lasted for 30 years, and she was an influential individual in the molding and shaping of jazz music as we know it today. Billie Holiday won four Grammy Awards, and she was even inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She will forever be remembered for her fantastic music!

Catherine is inspired by Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. In 1793, Catherine the Great became the Lady of Jever. Catherine the Great is the longest ruling female in Russian history. She did great work in educating the Russian people. She especially helped with educating women, as she helped establish Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens. This was the first higher education institute that was state-financed. Catherine is remembered as one of the great rulers in world history.

Catherine was made and designed by our intern, Isabelle Finley.

Clara is inspired by Clara Barton, the famous American nurse. Clara Barton was born December 25, 1821 in North Oxford, Massachusetts. Clara was a self-taught hospital nurse in the American Civil War. Barton did a great deal of humanitarian work and civil rights advocacy before women had the right to vote. In 1973, Clara was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She was also the founder of the American Red Cross. What an inspiration Clara Barton is!

Drina was inspired by Queen Victoria, whose childhood nickname was “Drina”.  She served as Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for 63 years. Queen Victoria was born in 1819 at Kensington Palace in London.  She lived until 1901. Under Queen Victoria’s rule, there was great cultural, scientific, and industrial change, which led to expansion of the British Empire.

Drina is a large royal blue, navy blue, emerald green and cream oversize saucer worn on a headband.  The colors are vibrant. Two dark blue silk flower accents are placed on the top and bottom of this saucer. A royal blue silk ribbon wraps around the base and edges of this saucer.  Large blue and green Lady Amherst feathers add extra drama.

Helen is inspired by the famous American author, political activist, and lecturer, Helen Keller. She was born June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. The story of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, was told in Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life.” This autobiography was later made into a movie called “The Miracle Worker.” Helen Keller campaigned for women’s suffrage and labor rights. Her birthplace is now a museum, and in 1971 Keller was inducted into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame.
